WeCompose – update

A few months ago I announced the start of my role as composer-mentor for Music in the Round’s WeCompose scheme. This involves work with young people in schools to mentor them as they compose pieces for the highly acclaimed Ligeti Quartet.

Now a couple of sessions into the scheme, students have come up with inventive musical ideas and exciting programmatic concepts, which they are beginning to manipulate in fantastically creative ways. Schemes like WeCompose are invaluable for keeping critical and open-minded thinking alive – especially at the moment, when there seems to be an ever-increasing push for a questionable over-reliance on empirical knowledge-modes.
